I came home for a brief lunch break today, and Naivie started following me around asking, "Daddy, whaddya doing? Whaddya doing? Whaddya doing?"
I answer: "Making a sandwich."
The next second: "Daddy?"
"What?"
"Whaddya doing?"
"I'm putting mayonnaise on my sandwich."
"Daddy, whaddya doing?"
"I'm getting out the ham."
"Daddy whaddya doing?"
"I'M SLICING TOMATOES!"
"Daddy--"
"WHAT???!!!"
"...whaddya doing?"
(Deep breath): "I'm sitting down to eat my sandwich, Dear!"
"...Daddy?"
(Mouth full): "Naivie!! I'm eating my sandwich!!! Now go ask mommy what she's doing."
I realized that all of my responses to my child's question bear an uncanny resemblance to the mindless status updates that people post on facebook every five minutes. I've heard that Twitter is even worse, but I wouldn't know. Sorry, friends... but get a life. I mean, seriously.
I've decided to create a facebook account for Naivie, so that she can sit there and ask all of her facebook friends "Whaddya doing? Whaddya doing? Whaddya doing?" every second of every day. She will be absolutely delighted to know that there are millions of people that would not only be thrilled to run to the computer dozens of times each day to answer that question over and over again, but that actually make it a priority in their daily routine whether or not anyone asks or even cares.
"Jordan is putting mayonnaise on his sandwich."
"Jordan is about to tie his shoes."
"Jordan is getting sleepy."
"Jordan is reading the news."
"Jordan is waiting for a phone call from a friend."
...But you know what? That friend will never call! After all, why talk when you can Tweet?! Why take the time and effort to speak to a friend, when a text message of 160 characters or less says pretty much everything you have on your mind?!
When I was visiting my parents in Moab not long ago, my dad was watching Jay Leno. He was talking about twittering, and facebook, and texting. He said something like: "You'd think that this would have been invented first, and then later they would come up with an invention where you can actually talk to the person." Brilliant, Jay.
So... friends...

Girls' Night!

During the Priesthood Session of Conference on Saturday night, while Jordan was gone, I decided that the girls and I were going to have a girls' night where we could do girly things and not feel bad about leaving Jordan out.
So we ate chocolate, watched a chick-flick, and painted our nails! I knew beforehand that this could be a very dangerous thing to do with two toddlers! But with the help of a big piece of cardboard, we managed to come out with clean carpet!
The girls did surprisingly well at being still while I tried to be very quick about painting and drying their nails... although as you can see in the pictures it wasn't the neatest job and Norah ended up with some on her leg. :)
I consider it a success! And even though the girls may not have found it as fun as I did, they enjoyed the treats, and they like to look at their pretty red toes! I think they're so cute that I have to do it again!

Book recommendations, anyone?

Our plight:
We're going on a long road trip at the end of April.
Our destination:
We're headed North! We're driving our way through Southern Idaho, cutting a corner accross Wyoming, navigating through Montana, and then venturing across the vast, featureless plains East of the Rockies... all the way to the distant city of Bismarck, North Dakota. It's about 14 hours straight driving time.
The reason:
I have a dear friend from Russia that is emigrating to the United States and getting married there on the 25th of April!
An interesting side note:
It is ironic that my friend happens to be getting married in North Dakota, because the only other living "Knutson" relatives I have on this earth outside of Moab (other than my Uncle Shawn's family in Idaho) happen to live in North Dakota. My Grandpa Ollie was born in a little town near Bismarck. He and his sister eventually headed south and made their way to Moab, but they left their older brother back at the farm in ND, who still lives there with his posterity close by. We'll be staying with some of them while we're up there.
Our need:
We want to get one...maybe two books on CD to listen to during our 28 total hours of driving. We need some recommendations.
Our taste:
We like a variety of books, to be sure. But for this particular trip, we would like something that:
a) is going to keep us awake. Something with some suspense, maybe some action, whatever.
b) does not contain any elves, wizards, magic, or vampires. I know I just shot down probably every book on the top ten right now.
Jaicee and I recently read the entire Great and Terrible series by Chris Stewart, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I myself have read a handful of the Dirk Pitt novels by Clive Cussler, which is possibly along the lines of what I'm looking for, but I'm up for something new. I've never read the DaVinci Code, (or seen the movie) so I'm thinking about that one.
You know that mood you sometimes get in when you tell your spouse:
"Let's watch a movie," because you're in the mood for a movie. Then spouse says,"What do you want to watch?" And you reply, "Idunno... Something good." Then spouse begins to make some recommendations, but you shoot them down, one after another, because you only really know what you don't want to watch, but you don't know exactly what it is you do want to watch? You know that mood? You've all experienced it, I'm sure. Same thing happens when you want to eat out. Well, that's kinda how I am right now with this book thing. So...
